Each of the four parts has its own role: generally, the lead sings the melody, the tenor harmonizes above the melody, the bass sings the lowest harmonizing notes, and the baritone completes the chord, usually below the lead. The melody is not usually sung by the tenor or baritone, except for an infrequent note or two to avoid awkward voice leadingin tags or codasor when some appropriate embellishment can be created.
One characteristic feature of barbershop harmony is the use of what is known as "snakes" and "swipes". This is when a chord is altered by a change in one or more non-melodic voices. Barbershop music is generally performed by either a barbershop quarteta group of four singers with one on each vocal part, or a barbershop choruswhich closely resembles a choir with the notable exception of the genre of music.
According to the Barbershop Harmony Society BHS"Barbershop music features songs with understandable lyrics and easily singable melodies, whose tones clearly define a tonal center and imply major and minor chords and barbershop dominant and secondary dominant seventh chords that resolve primarily around the circle of fifthswhile making frequent use of other resolutions.
Except for the bassthe voice parts in barbershop singing do not correspond closely to their classical music counterparts; the tenor range and tessitura are similar to those of the classical countertenorthe baritone resembles the Heldentenor or lyric baritone in range and a tenor in tessitura, and the lead generally corresponds to the tenor of classical repertoire, with some singers possessing a tessitura more similar to that of a high baritone.
Barbershop singing is performed both by men's and women's groups; the elements of the barbershop style and the names of the voice parts are the same for both. The defining characteristic of the barbershop style is the ringing chord, one in which certain overtones of the four voices reinforce each other, sometimes so strongly that the overtone is perceived by the listener as a distinct tone, even though none of the voices are perceived as singing that tone.
This effect occurs when the chord, as voiced, contains intervals which have strongly reinforcing overtones fifths and octaves, for example that fall in the audible range; and when the chord is sung in perfect just tuning without excessive vibrato. Both of these characteristics are important in many styles of singing, but in Barbershop there is an extreme emphasis on them that tends to override other musical values.
For example, favored chords in the jazz style are characterized by intervals which don't audibly ring, such as diminished or augmented fifths.
Tombo Pitch Pipe
For another example, Barbershop music is always a cappella, because the presence of fixed-pitch instruments tuned to equal-temperament rather than just temperamentwhich is so highly prized in other choral styles, makes perfect just tuning of chords impossible. The physics and psychophysics of the effect are fairly well understood; it occurs when the upper harmonics in the individual voice notes, and the sum and difference frequencies resulting from nonlinear combinations within the ear, reinforce each other at a particular frequency, strengthening it so that it stands out separately above the blended sound.
The effect is audible only on certain kinds of chords, and only when all voices are equally rich in harmonics and justly tuned and balanced. It is not heard in chords sounded on modern keyboard instruments, due to the slight tuning imperfection of the equal-tempered scale.
Gage Averill writes that "Barbershoppers have become partisans of this acoustic phenomenon" and that "the more experienced singers of the barbershop revival at least after have self-consciously tuned their dominant seventh and tonic chords in just intonation to maximize the overlap of common overtones.
What is prized is not so much the "overtone" itself, but a unique sound whose achievement is most easily recognized by the presence of the "overtone". The precise synchrony of the waveforms of the four voices simultaneously creates the perception of a "fifth voice" while at the same time melding the four voices into a unified sound.
The ringing chord is qualitatively different in sound from an ordinary musical chord e. Most elements of the "revivalist" style are related to the desire to produce these ringing chords. Performance is a cappella to prevent the distracting introduction of equal-tempered intonation, and because listening to anything but the other three voices interferes with a performer's ability to tune with the precision required.
Barbershop arrangements stress chords and chord progressions that favor "ringing", at the expense of suspended and diminished chords and other harmonic vocabulary of the ragtime and jazz forms. The dominant seventh-type chord is so important to barbershop harmony that it is called the "barbershop seventh". BHS arrangers believe that a song should contain dominant seventh chords anywhere from 35 to 60 percent of the time measured as a percentage of the duration of the song rather than a percentage of the chords present to sound "barbershop".
Historically barbershoppers may have used the word "minor chord" in a way that is confusing to those with musical training.
Averill suggests that it was "a shorthand for chord types other than major triads", and says that the use of the word for "dominant seventh-type chords and diminished chords" was common in the late nineteenth century. A song called "Play That Barber Shop Chord"  often cited as an early example of "barbershop" in reference to music contains the lines:.The wait is over.

So it solves one issue but causes another. The sticker works great and fits very nicely on the Tombo, but be aware that it looks weird to see your pitch pipe go C-B-A instead of A-B-C.

Any thoughts on this? Thank you! Yes, the low F can get somewhat muddy. The first pitch pipe given to me as a gift was an electronic one, and I absolutely hated it.
But, with the regular pitch pipes, it is more "real", to me at least. This is the pitch pipe the C-C I use with my SATB choir, and if you can't quite represent the bass or tenor notes on the pipe, just send it down the octave!!
Best of Luck with your choir!! I answered my own question. I went and checked one out at a music shop. The Kratt low F which is f above middle c did not seem muddy to me but I was careful to play it correctly.
I was glad I got the F to F because I need a B flat for one of my songs, and it is already 2 octaves higher than my basses, who are not very experienced. I love the instrument, perfect. Re: Which pitch pipe do I need? Have there been any advances in the devices available since the above messages were posted in ? Does anyone have recommendations? What have been your experiences with these gadgets? All help will be much appreciated. Perhaps a small cheap portable electronic keyboard would be suitable as all we need it for is to get our starting notes, and most of us are more familiar with a keyboard than with pitch pipes.

Mike: I really don't see why a pitch pipe would be useless, plus sorry if I didn't mention it, but my cousin is focused on classical singing. The way you're putting it is as if it were for just anyone who likes to sing, and I obviously know that a pitch pipe would be useless to someone who just likes to sing karaoke on the weekends.
I do know that he has taken voice lessons for about six years and he normally sings with choirs, like his high school choir and big choirs like the Texas All-State Choir [which is pretty hard to get in, I myself tryed out when in high school and All-Region was all I did, but music is not my thing and I was in choir only for two years]. Oh, and btw, pianos have 88 keys! Also, don't tell me Jessica Simpson can sing, I think everyone knows otherwise. But I do believe it from Mariah Carey, because she started singing at the age of three, plus her mother was an opera singer and vocal coach!

Get him an F-F pipe! The C-C will work, but the range of the F-F pipe is better suited to most male voices. Pitch pipes cannot help if they do not know how the note should sound. The best advise is to get him voice lessons. Truly some people can pick up how to sing from an instrument and knowing how the note should sound. Some people can do it naturally but if you tell them to sing an A or G they will look at you with confusion.
Truly Singing is one of them things you need a teacher to help or an instrument. Pitch Pipes are just blown by singers for reference to what key to sing in but even still most of them have taken or still take voice lessons. If you look around you can find him an affordable teacher online or at the local music store and just pay for the first 2 or 3 lessons. I guess the people who gave me a thumbs down did not know they learned by hearing the notes though being tought their instrument.
Which is sad that they feel they are natruals at it. It is not true no one can be a natrual at singing and know everything to be tought singing without lessons or the help of an instrument.Starting a song on the right pitch in the right key is necessary for worshipers to be able to particpate without distraction.
A capella worship leaders need some way to establish the keytone in their mind before they start the song. Use of a pitch pipe, tuning fork or some other form of reference tone is a must. Very few are blest with perfect pitch or pitch memory, so we have to depend on these devices to help us find the key and then the starting pitch. You will have to spend some time training yourself on how to recognize the keys.
There are several methods which are pretty simple. One is to memorize all of the key signatures. Not impossible but difficult for the beginner. There is a far easier method for learning the name of a key signature. First you need to memorize two key signatures C major has no sharps or flats in the key signature. F major has one Flat. For key signatures with flats you only have to look at the second to the last flat and that is the name of the key signature.
Here we see a signature with three flats, reading from left to right B-flat, E-flat and A-flat. The second to the last is E-flat which is the key signature name. Remember with flats you always look at the second to the last flat and that is the key signature name.
For signatures that have sharps we look at the last sharp and go up one half step, and that will be the key signature name. It is really that simple. If the last sharp is on the F-sharp then go up a half step to the G and that is the key name.
In the example to the left you see the last sharp is G-sharp go up one half step to A. That is the key.
This is really simple but so vital to pitching your songs correctly that you should spend time learning how to do this. Learn to do this quickly so you are not wrestling in your mind wondering what key to blow on the pitch pipe. Just having the correct key does not mean you have the correct starting note.
Not every song is going to start on the key tone of the scale. You might have to sing up or down the scale to the starting note. Practice this often.
Fortunately, most songs in your hymnal will begin either on the key tone Do or 1the 3rd Mi or 3 or the 5th Sol or 5 of the scale. This will aid you tremendously when it comes time to pitch the song and start it quickly. The congregation you lead will appreciate you for spending the time learning to correctly pitch and start songs.
